What it is
The material is S53P4 bioactive glass, made only of elements that already exist in the body: sodium, silicate, calcium and phosphate. Placed in a bone cavity it reacts with body fluids, forms a hydroxyapatite layer that new bone grows onto, and is gradually resorbed and replaced by bone over a period of years. It is radiodense, so healing can be followed on imaging after surgery.
Bonalive granules has been shown to inhibit the growth of up to 50 clinically relevant bacterial strains, which matters in bone infection and in reconstruction where the field may be contaminated. It has over 20 years of clinical history and is a Class III medical device.
What it changes for the hospital
Fewer procedures and a simpler procedure for the patient, which hands capacity back to the hospital and its staff.
